A recent study by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory looked at the resale value of homes in California that have sold with Grid-Tied PV systems. They found that a recently installed PV system increased the resale value of the home by $3.90 to $6.40 per watt.
This compares well to the current installed cost of grid tied PV systems which is in the range of $4.50 to $6.50, depending on a number of factors such as system size and roof construction. The research looked only at homes in California where there is adequate resale of homes with solar. While these results do not necessarily apply to other jurisdictions, homeowners in Canada can feel secure that their investment in solar electricity will continue to pay dividends even if they sell their home in the future.
