Utility-Scale Case Studies

Project:

32.8 MWP BROOKS SOLAR II

Project Details:

Brooks Solar II, a collaboration between Elemental Energy, Alltrade, and SkyFire Energy, is a 32.8 MWp (26.5 MWac) utility-scale solar project in Brooks, Alberta. Completed in July 2022, it expanded on Western Canada’s first utility-scale solar project, integrating advanced technologies to enhance grid stability, reduce emissions, and drive economic growth.

Challenges:
The project faced complexities such as transitioning to single-axis tracking (SAT) technology requiring innovative engineering to withstand Alberta’s climate, unstable ground needing tailored piling solutions, an irrigation canal to navigate around, and the installation of dual interconnection equipment to ensure seamless operation across two systems.

Solutions:
Bifacial SAT systems were used to optimize energy production by capturing sunlight and reflected snow light. The installation of 10,508 driven piles stabilized the system, while sustainable land use preserved agricultural areas. Dual electrical interconnection equipment ensured seamless grid integration and local labour engagement reinforced community and economic benefits.

Results:
Visible from the Trans-Canada Highway, Brooks Solar II showcases Alberta’s commitment to sustainable energy. Energized in July 2022, it delivers clean energy to the grid, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, supports grid stability, creates jobs, and transforms underutilized land into productive renewable energy assets.
