Project:

3.8 MWP Anahim Lake Solar & Battery Project

Project Details:

The Anahim Lake Solar Project is one of Canada’s largest off-grid solar installations and a landmark clean energy initiative for remote Indigenous communities. Led by Ulkatcho Energy Corporation, the project brings together experienced industry partners to reduce diesel dependence while delivering long-term, reliable, clean power. This collaborative approach ensured the project met technical requirements while aligning with community priorities and long-term sustainability goals.

This community has historically relied almost entirely on diesel generation, creating high fuel costs, logistical challenges, and significant greenhouse gas emissions. The community required an energy solution that could:

- Substantially reduce diesel consumption

- Improve long-term energy reliability

- Perform in remote and northern conditions

- Deliver lasting economic and environmental benefits

A 3.8 MW solar PV system, integrated with battery energy storage and existing diesel generation, was designed to support reliable power delivery through the local microgrid. The system enables solar energy to offset diesel generation while maintaining grid stability and operational flexibility. Built for northern conditions, the installation features durable racking, clean wiring, and high installation standards to support long-term performance and minimize maintenance requirements.
Once fully integrated and operational, the Anahim Lake Solar Project is expected to:

- Reduce diesel consumption by approximately 64%

- Displace ~1.1 million litres of diesel annually

- Significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions

- Improve energy reliability and cost predictability

- Strengthen long-term energy resilience

Beyond immediate emissions reductions, the project represents a long-term investment in future generations. Cleaner air, reduced environmental impact, and locally generated power help create a healthier, more resilient foundation for Ulkatcho youth; supporting stewardship of the land, energy self-determination, and sustainable growth for decades to come.

The Anahim Lake Solar Project sets a new benchmark for large-scale off-grid renewable energy in Canada. It demonstrates how strong partnerships, community leadership, and proven solar technology can deliver reliable, high-impact clean energy solutions in remote and Indigenous communities.
