What Is Infrared Scanning in Solar O&M?

Infrared scanning, also known as thermography, detects heat emissions in electrical components and connections. Every conductor emits infrared energy, and the intensity of this energy increases with electrical current. Using this information, an infrared camera converts these heat emissions into a visible light display. We then capture this display as thermal images for analysis. These images, also called thermograms, clearly show temperature distribution and differences across components of the electrical system.

In solar arrays, hotspots indicate higher or lower-than-normal temperatures. Often, defective PV modules, malfunctioning inverter components, or loose and corroded connections cause these issues.
