Greener Homes Grant: What to Know Before 2025 Ends
The Canada Greener Homes Grant is coming to a close as of Dec. 31, 2025. This program has helped hundreds of thousands of Canadians improve their home efficiency, lower their energy bills, and reduce emissions.

Greener Homes Grant

Launched in May 2021, the Canada Greener Homes Grant committed $2.6 billion in funding to support energy-efficient retrofits for Canadian homes. Homeowners could receive up to $5,000 in grants to help cover the cost of upgrades including:

  • Solar panel installations
  • Home insulation
  • Air sealing
  • Windows and doors
  • Smart thermostats
  • Renewable energy systems

The grant also covered up to $600 for pre- and post-upgrade EnerGuide home evaluations. As of February 2024, the program stopped accepting new applicants. However, if you’ve already been approved, you must complete your upgrades and submit all required documentation by December 31, 2025, to receive the funding.

Greener Homes Loan

To complement the grant, the federal government launched the Canada Greener Homes Loan. This program offers interest-free loans of $5,000 to $40,000, repayable over 10 years, to help homeowners manage the upfront cost of retrofits.

These programs have played a significant role in accelerating Canada’s move toward a low-carbon economy. They have made it possible for many homeowners to make meaningful improvements without the financial strain of large upfront costs.

Other Incentive Options

There are other incentives available at the provincial or municipal level, depending on your location. For example:

  • Alberta: Municipalities such as Edmonton and Calgary, and some of the surrounding communities, offer their own energy efficiency rebates or financing programs like the Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP).
  • British Columbia: CleanBC Better Homes and BC Hydro Rebates are still active for select upgrades.
  • Other Provinces: Check with your local utility provider or municipal government for available programs and incentives.

Industry leaders continue to advocate for additional Greener Homes funding, along with similar programs that can make renewable energy more accessible and affordable for homeowners.
